Their cross-section dimension shall not exceed 2 ¼ inches. For non-circular cross-sections, the perimeter dimension must be a minimum of 4 inches and not exceed 6 ¼ inches. A circular cross-sectioned handrail must have minimum and maximum outside diameters of 1 ¼ inch and 2 inches, respectively. The cross-section of the handrail can be either circular or non-circular, as shown in Figure-3.For elementary schools or facilities for children, a maximum height of 28 inches measured to the top of the gripping surface from the ramp surface or stair nosing must be provided. The handrail height must remain consistent with the above ramp surfaces. The top gripping surface of the handrail must be at a minimum height of 34 inches vertically above the ramp surfaces. The surface of the handrails must be continuous without interruption or obstructions.A clear space of 1 ½ inch must be provided between the handrail and the wall to which the handrail is attached.Discontinuous handrails shall be extended by 12 inches at the top and bottom, and parallel with the floor or ground surface (Figure-2).įigure-2: Top and Bottom Handrail Extension at Ramps. The inside handrails on switchbacks shall be continuous between the runs. Handrails must be continuous throughout the length of each ramp run. Installing an outdoor handrail costs around 700, on average, but your total could fall anywhere from 275 up to 1,150 based on the length and material. The main specifications for ramp handrails as per ADA guidelines are: Handrails are not necessary for certain walking surfaces, which is explained in ADA guideline Section: 505. The ramps must have handrails on both sides if the rise is greater than 6 inches or their length is greater than 72 inches. The landings at the top and bottom must be leveled.ĪDA Specifications for Wheelchair Ramp Handrails.Cross slopes are slopes provided sideways that are perpendicular to the ramp’s length. Cross slopes provided must be less than 1:50 with a stable and slip-resistant surface. The landing area must be at least 5 square feet. The length of the landings must not be less than 60 inches.A 24 ramp (without handrails) will store in a 76 tall by 38 deep by 16 wide space. When not in use, aluminum handicap ramps are easily stowed in a very small space. The landings must be provided at the top and bottom of the ramp with a width as same as the ramp. Easily installed and uninstalled, this aluminum ADA ramp can fit in a small delivery truck or minivan.ADA handrail railing is perfect for all interior stairways and hallways and our industrial powder coat finish makes them an excellent choice for exterior handrails too. The ramp edges must be protected to keep users from slipping off. The basic compliance allows handrails to be installed between 34 and 38 from ground surface to the top of the grab bar.The width of ramps must not be less than 36 inches. For existing buildings and facilities, ramps shall be permitted to have running slopes that are steeper than 1: 12 due to space constraints. A wheelchair ramp must have a maximum slope of 1:12.Table-1: Maximum Ramp Slope and Rise for Existing Sites, Buildings, and Facilities as per ADA
